Indonesia To Roll Out New Network to Support the Deployment Of 5G

In keeping with its position as ASEAN’s largest economy, Indonesia is expected to capture the largest share of rising consumer and enterprise revenues as a result of 5G deployment. A study by global management consulting firm suggested that the technology could lift consumer revenue across the region by 6-9% before 2025, and enterprise revenue by 18-22%, as operators spend an estimated $10bn on infrastructure investments.

Since the operation feasibility test, Indonesia’s leading digital telecom provider has moved on to the next stage of development of 5G in the country.

Recently, the Indonesian telecommunications provider collaborated with a networking vendor to launch the country’s first commercial deployment of segment routing over a network technology to support the development of its 5G services.

With the emergence of newer technologies such as Cloud Computing and Network Slicing, this new technology, along with the digital telecom company’s wide fibre optic network expansions, will support the growing demand for mobile data consumption. The network intelligent routing functionality that enables deterministic routing paths will ensure high quality and low latency on-demand services with faster data connectivity and full automation required to serve Indonesia’s digital communities. In addition, network slicing allows the company to create new digital services for each customer by enabling the functions that cater to their needs.

The creation of subnetworks will give specific characteristics to a part of the network, seeking to make it a programmable network, and will allow to prioritise connections, such as emergencies in front of other users, by applying different latencies or prioritising them in the network connection so that they are not affected by possible mobile network overloads.

The leading telecom provider, in partnering with Indonesia’s networking vendor, will accommodate the new requirements of 5G use cases of many business segments and industries, including fixed and mobile broadband services, through a fully automated network infrastructure, and seamlessly migrate the currently existing network to the next generation software-defined network to improve customer’s digital experience with optimised TCO as one of the key elements of its network automation and digital transformation strategy.

The deployment of 5G, according to the telecom provider’s CTIO, is a significant step toward constructing a future-ready, next-generation programmable transport network with automated operations enabled by the network technology’s software-defined network and intelligent segment routing functions.

The telecom provider, powered by the network vendor, aims to support Indonesia as it continues its digital economic transformation by driving operational efficiencies, customer experience, and product and service innovation across its organisations with the capabilities provided by network technology.

OpenGov Asia reported that the implementation of 5G technology is aimed specifically to provide the people with more equitable telecommunication access as well as boosting national economic growth. The technology is also expected to narrow the gap in digital technology use and accelerate literacy through using more adaptive technology.

Indonesia’s minister stated that if the 5G outcomes are achieved, Indonesia will become one of Southeast Asia’s digital economic powers, with 5G technology playing a crucial role in progressing further in future.

The 5G technology is expected to develop rapidly as it continues to be expanded based on solid market demand across the nations and across sectors. Apart from Java Island, the 5G network will be applied in priority tourism destinations, such as Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Borobudur in Central Java, Mandalika in West Nusa Tenggara [NTB], Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara and [NTT] and Liupang in North Sulawesi. The 5G network will also be available in manufacturing industrial areas and also in the country’s new capital by 2024.
